Read the numbers before the scenery
With two independent six-sided dice, a six or eight has five combinations out of 36, while a two or twelve has one. The dots on number tokens are a useful baseline for comparing production.
A corner touching 6, 9 and 10 has 12 baseline production combinations: 5 + 4 + 3. A corner touching 4, 5 and 11 has 9: 3 + 4 + 2. That compares expected resource production, not the chance of winning. Archipelago’s balanced dice also change the immediate next-roll odds as each cycle progresses.
Choose cards that work together
Wood and brick turn into roads. Add wool and grain and you can settle at the end of those roads. Grain and ore support cities, while wool, grain and ore buy development cards.
A productive ore corner can be strong, but if your second placement leaves you without grain you may struggle to use it. Compare complete opening pairs rather than ranking individual corners in isolation.
Look one settlement beyond the opening
Trace a plausible road toward another legal settlement site. Another player’s settlement can block a route; closely packed buildings can remove the space you expected to use.
A port is most useful when you can regularly produce its matching resource. Do not sacrifice your whole opening economy just to own a discount you cannot use. A flexible inland start may reach a port later.
Make the second placement fund a next move
Only your second starting settlement grants adjacent starting resources. Before placing it, work out what those cards let you do with your likely early production.
For example, a second settlement beside wood, brick and grain begins one wool short of the resource cost of a settlement. You still need a legal connected site and any roads required to reach it. Starting cards are a head start, not a free extra building.
- Check total production, then resource coverage, then expansion space.
- Expect contested corners to disappear before your next placement.
- Treat a plan as adaptable: the island and the other players decide which opportunities survive.
